What is Google Penguin?

Google penguin is also known as the Over Optimization Penalty.

Google Penguin is an update released by Google in the year 2012.

The objective of this algorithm was to gain greater control over and reduce the effectiveness of a number of black hats spamming techniques.

This is a  new effort to reward high-quality websites and diminish the search engine results page (SERP) presence of websites that engaged in manipulative link schemes and keyword stuffing.

Penguin targeted two specific practices:

  • Link Schemes
  • Keyword stuffing

Link spam is black hat technique to gain rank by posting backlinks on other (usually low-quality) websites.

This algorithm checks for spamming or irrelevant links that you are getting from other websites to your websites in order to increase the traffic of your websites. It’s not allowed.

For example, if your website is an education-related website and if you are taking link or backlinks from online lottery then that is not allowed.

If you are taking the link from the irrelevant website then Google will penalize you.

So make sure that if you are going to take links or backlinks it is from relevant websites. Most important from your niche.

It’s also best to have a few relevant links from high-quality sites rather than lots of links from low-quality sites.

One more important thing you can do is to check your anchor text. That’s the text that’s in the clickable part of a hyperlink on a web page.
